BRACE — Community Resilience Film
BRACE is a community-led initiative in and around Llanfyllin, Mid Wales, supporting practical local projects that strengthen community resilience, reduce waste and bring people together.
I produced a film bringing together several of these projects, including the Library of Things, Repair Café, Community Garden, Cae Bodfach and the Verges Project, alongside an introduction and conclusion exploring the wider ideas behind BRACE.
Rather than presenting the projects as a conventional series of interviews, the film was designed to feel like a journey through the community. Individual short films are connected by a visual grid of activity from across the different projects, allowing the audience to move from one story to another while maintaining a sense that they are all part of something larger.
Filming took place across a number of locations and community events, combining interviews, observational footage and everyday interactions between volunteers and local residents. The finished film was edited as a bilingual production, with English and Welsh subtitles presented together throughout.
The project was about more than documenting individual environmental initiatives. The aim was to show how relatively small, practical projects — sharing tools, repairing objects, growing food, managing public spaces differently and creating places for people to meet — can collectively make a community more connected and resilient.
