Arts Connection — Community Arts Project Film
I produced a short documentary film for Arts Connection – Cyswllt Celf, bringing together the story of a community arts project that had developed across several different localities.
The project began with a research and consultation phase, using conversations and creative workshops to understand what people in each community wanted and needed. Those discussions then informed a further programme of workshops, designed in response to what participants had identified.
I filmed activity across the different stages of the project, capturing the workshops themselves alongside participants, artists, conversations and the artwork produced. The challenge in the edit was to bring a large amount of activity together into a clear 5–6 minute story, while retaining the individual character of each locality.
The finished film follows the development of the project from the initial engagement and data collection through to the activities that grew out of it, before looking at some of the wider conclusions and possibilities for future work. Interviews and observational footage were combined with images of participants’ artwork and on-screen text to help explain the process without making the film overly reliant on narration.
The film was designed to work for two audiences: as an accessible overview of the project for the public and Arts Connection’s website, and as a concise record of its activity and outcomes for funders and project partners.
